Spent basically all of today upstairs in the granary converting the bunches of flowers we hung up there to dry into bouquets to take to market.
The two huge box fans that have been running up there have not saved a lot of what’s there from mildewing, in this going on two months now of greater than 90% humidity. I have resorted to knocking the mildew off of some stuff, because come the fuck on. I do feel that if the fans weren’t running, we’d’ve had 100% loss of everything we dried this year.
What blows my mind is how much of the stuff I put away in the spring, that was completely and totally dry, and I packed it into paper bags and stacked it neatly on a screen in the corner to use for potpourri this winter– how much of that completely dry and undisturbed stuff mildewed as well, just from existing. Much of it was salvageable, but some wasn’t, and it’s real irritating.
We need to do a big cleanout of that space, but probably that’ll be late winter, is my guess. I cleaned it out this spring, but by myself and without any help for heavy lifting, so I really just focused on clearing out the bits I wanted to use again this summer, and there are a lot of things back in the grain bin bays that are several years old and at this point, certainly mildewed or harboring mice.
Anyhow– there’s pumpkin spice potpourri, and almost 20 dried bouquets to take to market Saturday morning.
