i think i resolved them being Too Friendly Too Soon. Now she’s saved his life, so.

“Are they winning?” Damira asked. She couldn’t tell; they were in undergrowth now, she couldn’t see the road anymore.
“There’s like a hundred of them,” Nuradil said. He let go of her horse’s reins, and the animal stopped stubbornly, tossing its head. Nuradil looked awful, ashy-pale and shivering with pain. “Listen, change your clothes and wait until dark and then sneak back into the convoy. You’ll die out here alone. We’re too far from the city. Too far from anywhere.”
“What are you going to do?” she asked.
“I’m going to go back and fight,” he said.
“They’ll kill you,” she said.
“I know!” He looked terrified.
“They’ll kill other people as collateral damage to take you out,” she said.
He stared at her. “So I have to let them kill me,” he said, wavering. Well, it wasn’t like he was going to win any fights like that.
“No,” she said, and with an agility born of desperation, she lunged forward and grabbed his horse’s reins. “No, you have to fucking run, idiot.”
