it’s so fucked. i have an aunt who worked for the ny state gov (in recycling, so it’s not like, a thing) and she is always pretty clear on how much she despises the state politics so i had an impression that it was a bad scene but still. i listened to one interview with nixon and it’s obvious that, while probably well-intentioned, she had not a clue and was totally focused on nyc. still, what a shit show. i’m sorry you guys can’t have a more functional state gov.
You’d think we’d be a big enough pond for the scum to settle out but we somehow are not.
I’m just glad someone was willing to run, and as an outsider, she’ll probably be less devastated by the vitriol Asshole Incumbent can bring to bear on her. Because his world, while powerful, is truly, very small.
Gillibrand is another fascinating insight into this– she’s a granddaughter of a prominent member of the Albany machine, and while she likes to pretend she’s an outsider– and in some ways, she is, she had escaped and was, briefly, uninvolved, before being confronted with how little clout that meant she had made her dive back in (she describes all of this in her autobiography, which I bought and read and enjoyed, so it’s not like I’m making this up)– she’s really, really, really not. She seems to have a much better insight into the actual world than those who are thoroughgoing insiders, and I’m generally a fan, don’t get me wrong– but like. Aware of context. Beware the NY Political Machine, rest of the nation, beware– they can do good things for you but understand that they’re basically aliens.
All politicians are basically aliens, though. Anyone with any power is on some level fundamentally different than a normal person. It’s depressing to consider.
