my parents took us to a remote-ish hillstation in 07-08, and thank fuck they were carrying enough cash to cover the basics, cause not one single ATM was to be found. I’ve been on vacations to small towns in the last three years or so and there’s been maybe one ATM in the whole place, often not working. So, uh, yeah, depending on them isn’t a good plan in the less developed bits of Asia.

LOL as I was contemplating all this i realized that I, uh… don’t… know my PIN. I don’t know if I have one on this card. I literally have not used an ATM in years. And I’m not sure if Dude has either; I always ask him if he needs cash when I go to deposit my checks, and if I get paid in cash for working on the farm, I put it in a stash in the house that he knows to take from if he needs it.

Now, he never uses cash, so he almost never does, but. I do use cash, for almost everything.

That’s not to say there aren’t ATMs everywhere I go. But I’ve really reverted to not using them.

I figure it’s got to be real straightforward to exchange money– I’ve just basically never done it, because the bank rates at the ATM were always mostly fine.

And that, really, is going to be the dilemma– exchange a bunch of currency in the city before we go into the countryside, or assume that people will be happy to exchange for us?

I’m thinking we’ll exchange money in KG, but in Turkey… maybe not so much. We’re there a much shorter time, but I do plan to do a lot of shopping– I figure most of my souvenir-buying for this whole trip is going to be at the Grand Bazaar, and there’s no way there’s not a currency exchange there, or merchants who can do the necessary. And even if we don’t get that great a rate, the rate on the whole is so favorable I can’t complain.

Relatedly, I just filled out my travel plans with the US Consulate, which is a thing? Dude must have filled the thing out and had it sent to me? and there’s a big DON’T warning for most of Turkey, but they back it up with “if you must, stick to touristy places in the cities” and like… that’s the plan, guys, thanks!

So that’s reassuring. Anyway I’m on file with the US Consulate in Istanbul now.
