if finn and poe were played by two white guys and kylo and hux were played by black and latino men i 100% assure you no one would have latched onto general “side character who has maybe a handful of lines and is generally unpleasant and unforgivably evil” hux as much as they have to fill up his ao3 tag with over a thousand fics centered around him. it’s so frustrating that even when the white guy characters are, for once, sidelined to barely any lines and deplorable personalities, they still get proportionately more love and attention from the fanbase than beautifully written and portrayed black and latino main characters.
Finn, a black MAIN character has less fics with him than Hux does on ao3
you know i actually thought “that can’t REALLY be correct”, like i’ve been saying “proportionately" to refer to their respective number of lines and on screen appearances vs the size of their fanbase. but then i actually checked
are u KIDDING
i’m sure everyone who ships kylo/hux has a great reason, just like everyone who shipped Clint/Coulson, Arthur/Eames, Shawn/Lassiter, Nate/Elliot, and other white dude ships had a great reason. There is always a GREAT reason to ship two white dudes instead of anything involving men or women of color. But fandom’s whole it can’t be racism song and dance is ridiculous, insulting, and yes: racist. Come the fuck on. It’s wild that people still insist that of all the arenas in life, an internet community 100% leaves all biases and bigoted “it’s just a preference”s at the door and, thus, it’s just MERE COINCIDENCE that the same shitty patterns play out here as everywhere else in society.
OK I reblogged this before with a defense of the people writing Hux but i saw it again with a REALLY salty comeback about that, and I can’t find that one again, but I woke up so mad this morning.
Because this here is what’s so fucking stupid about fandom lately.
The awesome man of color LEAD of the film is being erased, and that’s shitty and racist, and while the example statistical analysis above is useful in one dimension, the universal reaction has been to come attack the Dark Side shippers. Yes, that’s who’s to blame here. All you darkfic assholes, who write morally-ambiguous shit, you are racist for not wanting to write fluff about Finn.
What? No.
Who you need to come after in your howling mob is not those who write fics that have Hux in them, but those who’ve written fics that ought to have Finn in them but don’t.
I read a really popular Five-Times-And-Once Rey/Poe fic that included speaking parts for every pilot who’d appeared onscreen in the movie, and a number of named supporting cast who hadn’t even had lines. (Awesome, that’s great, supporting characters rock!) It was 25k words long. Finn was not in it. Not even mentioned. Nary an explanation of how Poe got off the Finalizer if he’d never met a particular Stormtrooper. Finn just didn’t exist. Did the two authors (it was a collab!!! at least two pairs of eyes created this!!) who wrote it mean to be racist? I’m sure if you asked them they’d be shocked and horrified that you’d even suggest it.
But yes. That’s racist as fuck. The entire movie was a setup for Rey/Finn, and Rey/Poe never even met. Ship who thou wilt, sure, but to just– straight-up pretend that there never was a black dude in the movie, so you can have your white lady and your white-looking Latin dude bang? That’s racist as fuck. Yes.
Was Hux in that fic? No. He wasn’t. Pava was, Snap was, Kun was, Radio Technician #4 was, but no. Hux wasn’t. But, there’s your statistic; the next story that had room for a villain, Hux was in, and there’s your statistical discrepancy.
(There’s nothing wrong individually with Rey/Poe. I have some Rey/Poe I’m working on. But Finn is a fucking character in the story. Jesus fuck. He’s the reason both of them are alive and in the same place. You can’t just– pretend that didn’t happen, and still be writing canon-compliant. And if your entire AU premise is The Black Dude Doesn’t Exist, there is really no other way to describe that besides racist.)
But those are the people you need to go after. The reason that Hux has more fics than Finn despite having like two lines is not that people who write fics that need a villain in them are racist, it is that your beloved fluff shippers are omitting Finn from where he ought to be. And yes, it’s weird that it’s so bad that a lot of your fluff writers are suddenly turning to Kylux, and yes, it’s deeply fucked-up that they’re starting to write fluff fics for this deeply fucked pairing.
But it’s not wrong for people to write darkfics, and that’s who this meme is now attacking. Don’t come after the darksiders. The statistical discrepancy is all y’all fluff writers not doing their due diligence. Hux is a symptom, not the cause.
This is not my best-written thing here but I’m– like, yes, ship who thou wilt! but don’t come after the darksiders like this! I watched you come for the Hydra Trash Party and threw up in my mouth, I’m not gonna sit here and be all “ohhhhh yes mmm hux is the problem” when he’s a goddamn symptom. Direct your crusades in productive directions and write more Finn, but don’t start yet another fucking witch-hunt against the people who don’t write fluff.
