the fourth engine finally caught, with a great belch of smoke and much cheering
she taxied right past us, clearly somebody had measured out exactly where to make everyone stand.
National Warplane Museum 2018 Airshow, Geneseo NY, July 14th: a selection of photos I took.
I did not come undistracted and Ready For Action, really, but I did make an attempt. I had this 50-500 supertelephoto lens I’d bought and never used, and an unfamiliar monopod, and I did not get there early and stake out a spot, and I didn’t double-check my camera settings, and I didn’t even charge up my battery, so I got some iffy results. But I did get a few things I was happy with, and mostly, I just enjoyed the airshow.
And I got to see a B-17 take off– and land! My patience was rewarded, she landed as we were making our way back to the parking lot.
The B-17 was not as loud as the B-25 Mitchell, a much smaller plane. I had expected it to be much noisier. And i know they’re big but… really, in flight, they don’t look all that big.
When she’s coming toward you the lights on starboard and port kind of gleam forebodingly like oncoming headlights. It’s very threatening. She’s honestly very sinister-looking, which isn’t conveyed by on-the-ground shots.
And of course, as always, the C-47 is Whiskey Seven, who belongs to the museum and is their hometown queen, and of course she has a jump team, fourteen brave souls who throw themselves out of her even though she’s a perfectly good airplane. I only recently finally looked up the C-47 and confirmed it’s the same thing as the venerable DC-3, the single longest-consecutive-use commercial aircraft in the world. They’re still flying, in fairly large numbers.
