So, yurt times, meaning not a lot of Internetting; I’ve been pretty good about updating Instagram via Stories but I haven’t had the wherewithal to make proper posts that crosspost very much.

I’d been meaning to clean up around the yurt but I really missed my window for hand-weeding. I needed a weed-whacker but the farm one isn’t working. So finally yesterday I borrowed Mom and Dad’s push mower, because there is literally nothing smaller on the farm than a tractor-towed mower. Yes, not even a ride-on or a tractor belly-mower. To mow around the yurt I’d have to clear everything away, back the Kubota in there, turn it on, turn it off.

So anyway. Borrowed the push mower and just– mowed the Virginia creeper and garlic mustard and it turns out, poison ivy, down to nothing, and finished digging out the fire pit so I could refill the random hole in the ground next to the outhouse.

So then @unicornduke came by in the evening since she lives locally, and helped me unload the wood I’d pilfered from the burn pile up on the gravel bank and kept dry in my car by being too lazy to unload it. (I’d spent the morning ferrying Farmkid around to the market and home and all over. I’ve actually basically been in her near-constant company for a large portion of this past week, which really adds up to me not getting a ton done except for that– which is fine, that’s mostly what i’m here for, but my sister is feeling neglectful as a mother, and I’m just a little burnt-out. I like hanging out with her fine, but after a couple of days I’m not as patient with her as I ought to be.)

Anyway– we made a bonfire, took her giant dog on a walk around the farm, while Dini the farm dog tried earnestly to be friends– she doesn’t really care about other dogs but sometimes in her old age she tries to care– and then I cooked a whole chicken cut into like five pieces over the fire, which turned out better than it ought to have given that the fire had died down too much while we were walking around and so I had to build it back up and then just– set the chicken on fire too. It turns out you can just set a chicken on fire. (Not really. But sort of.)

Then there were s’mores, and then it rained so we all went our separate ways. I sat by the fire in the rain a little bit, because it was really pleasant.

We’ll see if cutting down the vegetation helps alleviate the mosquito issue out by the yurt. They’ve been… active at night and I haven’t managed to seal up all the places they get into the yurt.

One thing I did get done today was to finally cut out a square from the yard of 20-gauge vinyl I bought online, and set grommets into the four corners of it. I’m going to try it as a new roof hole cover, to keep water out and let light in. Worth an experiment, anyway.

I wish I’d gotten 2 yards, but they were selling 2-yard cuts for much more than twice as much as 1-yard cuts. I’d make myself a door!

Oh well. I’m going to go bake a chicken for dinner.
