I’ve been thinking about this phenomenon a lot, particularly with Sebastian Stan. He’s ten years younger than me and I’m an ex smoker and an ex meth user, and he still has more wrinkles on his face than me. My theory is that it is all the rapid weight gain and loss that actors are expected to do, and the incredibly low level of body fat that you have to have for your abs to look like that. I also sort of wonder if steroids are involved

I know that sun exposure is a huge factor– my brother-in-law is a year or two younger than me and has killer eye crinkles, and my sister, five years younger than me, has the beginnings of lines. She’s kind of weathered. It’s also more allowable in men than women, for sure, but I don’t know if men are prone to it more. (FWIW, my dude, who gets 0 sun, has no notable eye crinkles, at 38. But this may be related to his genetics– he looks like a super normal northern european, vaguely scandinavian even, maybe German, but he’s actually Baltic, and so doesn’t burn in the sun, and has other weird skin/pigment things that set him apart from me invisibly. So it may be that; B-I-L is Irish/German mutt like me and as we all know, there’s no sun resistance there whatsoever.)

You’d think that actresses would show the same patterns of wear as actors, if it were down to the stresses of the biz– but yeah, no, I guess you’re right, female actors never are required to bulk up for roles, they’re only required to be constantly as skinny as possible, and maybe will vary from having biceps to having rail-thin arms by role, but they’re not expected to go on steroids. (Sebastian Stan absolutely did a shitload of steroids to Winter Soldier himself, and it’s heartbreaking because he did not need to, the role would have been fantastic if he’d played it thin and that’s when his face got so creased.) (I don’t feel like Fassbender’s ever been bulky for a role, though! He’s been ludicrously thin– I mean, he literally starved himself to play Bobby Sands in Hunger– and he’s been toned as fuck [uhhh 300], but he’s never bulked up, so I’d be astonished if he’d bothered with steroids, but that’s not to say he hasn’t done other horrible things to himself. I mean– after Hunger, he literally couldn’t thermoregulate, he went all in to play a man who died on hunger strike and Christ, was it convincing.)

I guess men and women are subject to different wear patterns, as actors. But I mean… any lines or weathering on a woman’s face are disqualifying, from most roles, whereas Sebastian Stan may have weathered himself into more serious roles instead. I’m not worried about Fassbender’s career over some crow’s feet, you know?

And like. It’s not like he looks bad. But he looks old. It’s weird.
