@unicornduke replied to your post So possibly the most doable project on my list…
yeah I got one of those when I was in europe and it was….fine. But when I can, I just use regular towels
That was what I thought. We went to “try on” duffel bags at Dick’s and they had more of those towels and they were like… $20.
So I took a 60″x60″ square of linen I had and cut it in half, serged the raw edges and turned them under, and now I have two of what looks like a scarf but is suitable for a towel, and I’m honestly conflicted, I could just wear it as a scarf… Well, anyway, I washed and hung-dry both of them and have one hanging in the bathroom to use as a hand towel for a while and see if I like it. I can always get microfiber towels if that doesn’t work out.
Or, I mean. We’re going to Kyrgyzstan, not the moon– most of the places seem to be perfectly normal hotels, on the inside at least. (I’m not surprised that Kz is no great shakes in terms of vernacular architecture– they’re nomads, who then got settled by Soviets, so like. They’re doing what they can with what they got and I’m not judging. Their yurts are way nicer than mine.) So clearly, there are towels. But I don’t want to be caught without a towel, and if we do any trekking, there might not be amenities.
Maybe I’ll wear it as a scarf AND use it as a towel. Also maybe I’ll put it through the dryer so it’s not so crunchy. That’s the thing with linen; it’s so soft out of the dryer. How did the ancients cope, without dryers??
