So Dude has been thinking about the upcoming trip to Central Asia, and has been thinking about luggage. He’d sort of been assuming we’d just use our regular luggage, and was surprised when friends of his suggested not relying on rolling luggage for a multi-modal trip across an unfamiliar continent.
I had been figuring on using a hiking backpack I got in high school, and a duffel bag I already have, and I’d been starting to ponder looking at new luggage, but my overall thought was that we should probably be able to carry our stuff for like, a quarter to half-mile or so, without a luggage cart, that’s just– sensible?
I had forgotten, I’ve traveled a lot more than Dude– a backpacking trip in high school, and that one year after high school, and a couple of other trips here and there before I knew him adds up to kind of a lot of experience. He’s only been on car trips, mostly, and family visits, with a couple of exceptions.
Anyway, I remembered that Tough Traveler exists. They’re a luggage factory in Schenectady, NY, and they specialize in unglamorous but sturdy Cordura or nylon backpacks and baby carriers. I have a Tough Traveler hiking backpack somewhere.
I went looking for it last night, finally, and I can’t find it, so I think it’s at my mother’s house or possibly has been given to one or another of my sisters. I’ll have to dig for it. It’s a simple backpack but held 2 weeks of clothing for me, so I couldn’t complain.
I’m also thinking we may want to get some hiking-style clothes that can be rinsed out in hotel rooms. It’s not until September but that’s honestly not that long now.
