So I sell film developing on Etsy, and someone purchased the service uhhh literally a year ago, and just sent me a message about 2 months ago “I never got my pictures! how do I get them?”

and I wrote back “you have to mail your film to me for me to develop it” as politely as I could. (I know I wrote about this on here.)

She wrote back “Do I mail it to you first?”

and i was like “… yes?” and pasted my previous reply into the body.

The package just arrived. I recognized the name.

I was like, “OK, everybody, gather around, because I want someone else to witness this in case there’s something really fucking weird in this package, because clearly this person has a fundamentally different understanding of how the world works.”

I let the suspense draw out as I fumbled some scissors through the tape and got the package open.

I don’t know if I’m relieved or disappointed that the package, which was supposed to contain 4 rolls of 35 mm film, did actually contain 1 roll of film, 2 disposable cameras, and 1 roll of APS film which isn’t the same thing but close enough.

It also contained fifteen pages of email correspondence between me and the customer, none of which included the order receipt, and 14 pages of which were mangled code garbage from Microsoft Outlook or somesuch.

Hey. Suspense ended, I guess. Of course, Etsy just let me auto-archive all my way-beyond-due orders where customers never sent me things and I gave up on trying to email them, so I just had to do a fascinating spelunking expedition to try to find this order since her 15 pages of correspondence did not include the specifics of what she had ordered. But hey. I’ll take it.

(like, for the record, i’m not hating, I’m just sort of perpetually bewildered and astonished by the very, very different ways in which people unexpectedly experience the world. i literally had to explain to someone the entire concept of how non-digital photography even worked, recently, and I’m not judging; clearly, there are people to whom this is all news, and honestly that’s not that surprising, it just is to me because I lived through it, you know? I’m not playing, I have genuine compassion here, it’s just so astonishing sometimes to realize how different a place other people are genuinely coming from.)
