Chicago was lovely, we flew out yesterday midday, arrived in time for lunch with some long-missed folks, had time to catch a quick nap before dressing up for the party– the wedding was lovely, there were peacocks and assorted related hilarity, everyone looked wonderful, many people complimented my dress/hair thing/ shoes, which was unexpectedly gratifying. Sunday morning we all got ourselves together and some of us went Adventuring into Chicago. We went to Pullman, which was built as a company town for the Pullman Palace Rail Car Company, and toured around it– first the neighborhood, which is fascinating and lovely, and then the ruins of the factory. I knew during this that I was getting sunburnt– I had not come prepared, and had no hat and no sunscreen. None of the others did either but they were all genetic relatives of Dude– a little-known fact is that while Latvians, ethnically Baltic peoples, look just like Scandinavians, they are not, they actually somehow have skin that can tolerate sunlight. They are blonde-haired green-eyed light-skinned people who actually brown in the sun. And so none of them thought for even a moment about a hat, sunscreen, any of it– when on the tour, there was often a mix of sun and shade in the area where we paused, and most of them went and stood happily in the sun, turning their faces up to it for the duration of the pause. I was like these people are aliens, and skulked in shadows as much as I could, literally shaded my face with my hands, and hung about in the lee of buildings and such, but sometimes it was unavoidable. And so I got very sunburnt, just on my chest above my shirt.

BUT I didn’t get any hives. So. That’s the first time in about three years that I’ve managed to get a sunburn, because in prior years my skin would have started prickling and burning and coming up in welts before there was a chance to get burned. So I’ll take it, and I have a lot of aloe now.

But it was bad enough that strangers in the line for the bathroom at the airport were like “yo girl where did you fly in from” and I was like “no, I was here, lady.” And all the Latvian relations were like “wait when did that happen” and could not believe it when I was like “just now! when we were standing in the goddamn sun all morning! You were there! I haven’t been out of your company all day!”

I had to explain about other Northern Europeans to them.

But I think this will heal all right– part of the thing about being translucent is that you burn easily and it looks terrible but it’s not actually that bad. I hope. I’ve aloed it and it’s at least no longer radiating heat.

And we got home at like 1am, which wasn’t awful. Chita made horrifying noises until I fed her, and then periodically made some more horrifying noises when she clearly forgot that we’d come home and was feeling sorry for herself. But at 2am when it started raining the distinctive sound of a cat clawing the shit out of a screen woke me, and I stumbled out onto the screen porch to yell at Chita only to discover that the clawing was coming from the outside of the window, and one of the neighborhood cats was apparently trying to get it. Chita wasn’t even in the room. So I chased him off and shut the windows, and Chita slunk out to be like “yo that dude’s weird”, and then she followed me back to bed and spent the rest of the night capturing my arms to lie on them, in various configurations.

Dude did not take today off work. I think he’s nuts. I did, and begged off chicken slaughter tomorrow because I would have had to leave by now today and I have no clothes and the house is a disaster and there’s no food and I am not prepared to spend a week away. I’m just not.

But I do have to get off my ass and go take care of some of those things now.

My best sunburn tips:

- white vinegar for recent burns. It leaches out any residual heat preventing the burn from getting deeper.

-aloe is great. the gel goop with a topical pain reliever is great too. you can keep both in the fridge for extra cold relief.

-coco butter helps prevent peeling. Moisturize the shit out of that burn.

- If you do peel, my favorite sugar scrub is literally some sugar out the kitchen and some olive oil. Apply in shower.
