Two things I want to write about:
Space gangs
Space Mayans
How do I stay in my lane and still do justice to these concepts?
This is a thing I am pondering deeply.
You’re going to be fine. I BELIEVE IN YOU. This lady is doing The Lord’s Work y'all, the sheer scope and love and nuance going into the thought process behind this– I myself may have only glimpsed a fraction of it, but I was blown away. AWAY.
I think what has made this work bomberqueen is that it’s really obvious from the story that you care a lot about people and about trying to get where they come from and who they are in a way that is deep instead of superficial. It’s that kind of depth of feeling, combined with a broader intellectual capacity to take into account more complex social and cultural topics–
You’re going to be fine!! 👍💯✨
I’m pleased by your faith in me, I truly am. :)
But I’m also keenly aware that there’s a big difference between intending to do something and actually doing something. (I feel like there’s a succinct phrase for that. Intent vs. impact is how they put it when discussing sports penalties? Whether you meant to commit a foul or not is immaterial as to whether a penalty is assessed; the only thing that matters is what the impact of your action was.)
So, I mean. I seem to have handled things okay so far, but I gotta be aware that if I want to expand my metaphorical Space Latinos to include such hot-button issues as gangs and indigenous peoples, I have to tread real carefully. Especially since I want to go with some Vanished Peoples mythology bullshit– that, I gotta be real careful with, because the Mayans aren’t fucking vanished thanks very much, there are still millions of them; the Spaniards dismantled their civilization, but very much did not eradicate them, and the bullshit in 2012 about the end of the Mayan Long Count was super shitty because it was predicated on them being gone and they’re really not.
Using anything about real people, especially real marginalized people, is a touchy thing to do, and I have to look long and hard at all of it. I’m poking at it, but I might have to super downplay it if I can’t make it hang together in a way that’s not icky. You know?
Especially with the Internet, because you know and I know that I’m a Nice White Lady Who Means Well, but that doesn’t mean shit to some rando whose family I decided to exoticize for AO3 kudos, y’know?
