This Is Not My Cat
Via Pleated-Jeans.com
Funfact, stray cats who were previously house cats (often abandoned in strange areas away from their homes) will sometimes go into whatever house they can find, because they know they belong in a house.
That’s not a fun fact. That’s a very sad fact.

“this was not my cat but after finding that out, it is now”
On the other hand, a lot of cats who are *not* abandoned just… see open doors and go in. Our neighbors’ cats come in a lot, and we have to shoo them back out. But sometimes it’s worse: My sister’s baby girl had her cat sort of stolen this way– they went away overnight, and came back and the cat was gone. The cat was from a litter belonging to the little girl’s best friend, who they’d left behind in their old neighborhood when they moved away, and would probably seldom see again. Heartbroken, they put up posters all over the neighborhood, to no avail. Cat had a collar, with her name and their number. Nobody ever called. Reluctantly, they concluded she’d been hit by a car or killed by wildlife, and mourned her.
Months later, her dad found the cat in someone else’s yard. Went up, cat clearly recognized him. Hey same collar, with his number on it. Asked the people. They sort of shrugged. “How did you not see our posters?” he asked. The neighborhood is a cul-de-sac. “And like. The phone number on the collar?”
Retrieved the cat, joyous reunion with daughter. Months later still, cat happily with original family; it’s not like she was being abused, she just wandered off.
Just… the new people just kept her. Please don’t just keep a cat.
