I have been trying with limited success to find out the Turkic words for the various yurt parts, because I want to know how similar they are. Mongolian for yurt is “ger”, for the walls is “khana”, for the roof ring is “toono”, and for the roof rafters is “uni”. I know that the Kyrgyz word for “yurt” just translates to “gray house” because they use undyed wool for the outer layer, reserving all decoration for the interior, so their yurts are just gray blobs on the outside and their curved roof rafters make them look like they’re slumping, and then you open the door and it’s a riot of color inside. I love that aesthetic.
But I don’t know what they call the various parts. I know the big differences between Mongol and Turkic yurts are 1) the Turkic yurts use steam-bent uni so that the roof rises vertically from the walls before tilting up to a peak, and 2) Mongol ger often have upright supports connecting the toono to the ground, and Turkic yurts seem never to have those, and 3) Turkic toono tend to have really ornate arrangements of bent willow spokes in the center, and that’s actually what the symbol on the Kyrgyz flag is.
But yes– I think there’s a fascinating interplay of language and cultures in Central and South Asia that I had hitherto known little to nothing about, and I’m so interested to know more. That’s fascinating, about Hindi having the same word for a slightly different meaning.
And most of the information online about yurts is derived from Mongolian sources, and that’s what the guy who made mine had studied too. It’s part of the reason I’m so very interested to go to the Nomad Games, because there are a lot of yurt enthusiasts in the US now, and most of them are profoundly ignorant of where yurts are actually from.
