So I spent the morning leveling the yurt platform with some paver blocks and a hydraulic jack, then took Farmbaby up to Valley Falls to get a tractor part, and the guy behind the counter, a distinguished gentleman with a salt-and-pepper beard, recognized me first and I realized he’s the brother of two of my sisters’ friends, and I hadn’t seen him since he was 15, but he knows my family. He’s.. shit, we’re old.
And I stopped for ice-cream with Farmbaby at a Stewart’s well outside my normal route, and I walked in the door and the staff all knew her, she’s got the same unusual name as the daytime manager of the store and she’s a local celebrity. Oh, my mother takes her there sometimes, that’s why they know her. They all recognized her right away, though.
So I got to my mom and dad’s, and Farmbaby was so excited to help us fix the yurt that she turned the TV off early even though she’s entitled to an hour, and then ran around outside eating violets.
Dad had picked up enough 2x4s, and I started prying apart the broken and bent slats out of the yurt khana (wall lattice), but I was making little headway. After a few frustrating hours, I decided that the thing to do was to set up the walls, and then do the repairs with the thing upright. Working on the ground just didn’t work.
So we all adjourned to the farm, and went out to dinner, and Mom and Dad took Farmbaby home for a sleepover, which she dearly wanted to do.
But my two little sisters came outside with me after dinner, and set up the khana and door frame, and helped me replace every broken slat. Middle-Little has decent attention to detail, and Farmsister has strong hands, and we all made endless jokes about nuts (because the khana is laths held together with carriage bolts, with nuts and washers on the end of each one). We worked until 8:30 and finished just as it got too dark to see.
Tomorrow I hope the rain will stop by midafternoon, and we can put the bed in, and the canvas on, and I don’t care if the rest of the furniture gets in it, I just want it watertight. (And I can’t get the bed in once the walls are attached, so it’s got to go in first.)
I ought to get it set up enough to sleep in it tomorrow night but let’s be real here, I probably won’t.
