I got like a brutal one-eye headache just like, sandpapering at the back of my left eye socket, so like. hi. ow. quick hit ‘cuz i gotta use this joint like a journal or i forget my own fuckin’ name.

as i was getting my shit together and coming up the back stairs to the guest room here i was thinking wistfully about how it’s already wednesday night and i still haven’t even started getting the yurt set up and like i should uh… work on that… but i’m waiting for dad to come back in to town, he’s been down in maryland with the army sister’s babies and all, he’s not coming back until… uh.

uh it’s. um.

it’s not wednesday.

no, today was monday… i’ve only been here two days. chill, self.

today I took farmbaby to school after playing half a board game and some dress-up with her. we sat in the car and read for a few minutes, and she watched the other kids arrive, and told me all their names, their siblings’ names and ages, and their parents’ names and jobs. i kept saying ‘don’t you want to get out and play with them’ as the horde of kids ran by shrieking in glee, and she was like ‘… mm, nah.’ It was kind of funny.

I came back and wound up loading the truck and taking all the farm’s garbage to the town’s recycling center/transfer station. (you don’t get to throw stuff in the dump yourself in this modern era, alas. i only vaguely remember the days of doing that, as a kid.)

I also… collected feathers from the mortal remains of the former rooster known as Odin, which was… I mean… sort of not that gross, and sort of exactly as terrible as it sounds, so. Let’s move on.

I had like 45 minutes of downtime after all that because b-i-l had the car and thus had to pick up Farmbaby from school, and I remembered about and devoured Briarley, which I ought to review. It’s exceedingly tightly-paced and riveting and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I think it took me about an hour to inhale it, all told, but that’s not saying much.

brb going to leave a review. lol i share an amazon account with my dude so this is going to be under his name, which is great. he never writes reviews and i often do, so. suck on that, data miners. i guess. anyway.

after lunch i washed eggs, which is like, an endless part of life on this farm. and then the three remaining pigs from the last batch were to be loaded onto a trailer– fortunately, a nearby-ish farm with whom we’re friendly had need of some more pork to sell, as they don’t raise pigs over the winter so are nearly six months out from their next batch, and so they could happily relieve us of the three pigs we still had left over from the winter ones. but as anyone who’s ever tried it knows, trying to get pigs to go anywhere at all ever is a fucking nightmare. i was stood off to the side with farmbaby, and that was fine– i’d started out being a human fence, but then we realized that farmbaby can’t be trusted not to make a ruckus at the pigs, so i had to take her away. (When they wouldn’t go where we wanted, she shrieked at them, and a shrieking child sounds like a shrieking pig and it upset them a lot, they thought one of themselves was getting murdered. It was pretty bad.)

I came back out and saw that they finally got the pigs to go where they needed to. There was one left, a little boar they’d bought and then realized they didn’t need. He was seemingly happy to be on his own, since nobody was pushing him away from the food, until he finished the food, and realized he was all alone. And then he freaked out and screamed for like, 20 minutes, which was sort of heartbreaking– we thought he’d be pleased not to be bullied, but pigs are gregarious and he’d never been alone before. He’s literally six inches away from the breeding sows and their babies, but he can’t see them and can’t touch them, and for him that counts as being profoundly alone. Pigs can be kept alone, and he will be fine, but he’s never been alone before and really was bowled over by the whole concept. We’re trying to sell him, or give him away, but so far there are no takers.

Anyway. Poor weird little bastard. We’ll see what becomes of him.

Farmbaby had hit upon the idea of a tea party, so we went and had one, and then she wanted cookies, so we baked cookies and a coffee cake, and she sort of helped a little, for a while. Sort of.

So at least tomorrow’s breakfast is sorted. i am so weary i don’t know how i’m going to get enough of myself together to start thinking about setting up the yurt.

We have to try to move the sows and baby pigs tomorrow. We’re really going to try to do it by connecting their current run to the one they’re going to live in henceforth, and just leaving it all connected and letting them slowly wander over that way, and then fencing them into the new area. I doubt it will really work, but I do think it’s better than trying to get them onto a trailer, which is approximately the worst concept I can imagine.

The idea is that there’s going to be this new barn, and it’s going to have permanently-installed fencing in a couple of places, and then all the runs are just going to be that the pigs go in them and move along them, so no pigs ever have to be really herded anywhere, and above all else, no pigs ever have to be loaded into any kind of trailer, because that’s the fucking worst. So. We’ll see.

But this new barn has to happen, and I don’t know what the deal with that is but in this moment everything in the entire world seems too complicated for me to even imagine, so.
