Is it a robe a l'anglaise? it’s a long time since I did 18th-c and the pleats at the back are weirdly stitched down, but that’s my favorite style of dress I’ve never made…

I think it is! I’m not completely sure Black Sails cares that much about historical accuracy in costumes or other details. It’s supposed to be a c. 1715 robe, and I guess they were aiming for muted (puritan) colours and modest enough volumes, but in good-quality fabrics. Miranda’s best clothes! The waist is marked (is it how you say it in English?) in the back even though the back of the skirt appears to be made with the same pieces of fabric as the bodice, with gores inserted. The sides look like they’re gathered like a normal skirt, with some sort of button to allow attaching the front flaps to the waist.

I don’t even know if I’m using enough of the right terms to be understood! Ack. Lack of knowledge about 18th c. fashion + non-native speaker = feeling very insecure here.

Oh gosh, don’t be insecure! I am fluent in 0 languages besides English and don’t even know the proper dressmaking terms myself. I just Googled it a little bit and found that it’s probably actually a robe a la francaise instead– christ I can’t even spell that, LOL, if we’re casting shade on people’s facility with languages…

I was just thinking that if you’re trying to make it, you might be able to find some tutorials and patterns if you know what style they’re trying to call out to, whether or not they’re strictly accurate or not.

Anyway it looks to me like the style was called either robe a la francaise or a l’anglaise sort of interchangeably, and some of them have the draped back and others have the pleats sewn down like the example you’re imitating, so it’s perfectly likely they did at least have someone knowledgeable consulting on the costumes!

I’ve always wished I had reason to properly do 18th century. It’s my favorite century in terms of fashion…
