I was like… 150k words deep in this epic and had written my characters into a corner and was so determined to finish the whole thing before posting any of it, and that meant i was slowly suffocating under my own bullshit because the joy of fanfic, see, is the energy you get from posting it and getting responses, see, and I was denying myself that, and then suddenly I had this flash of insight, who had I been forgetting about– I’d dismissed Kes as probably also dead so Poe was probably also an orphan because literally every character in every bit of fic ever is either an orphan or just Conveniently Isolated because people hate writing ensemble casts and family dynamics– and I was like no. No, Kes is alive. And pissed-off.
And you know who’s even more pissed-off at Kes?
BB-8.
Poe figures it’s just inevitable, everyone who loves you stops loving you, but BB-8, now, ey’s a robot ok, ey’s had to research everything ey knows, and ey knows that that’s not supposed to be how blood family works okay, Kes is either a bad person or obligated to love his son, and BB-8 knows Kes and knows he is not a bad person and that means he is shirking his obligation, and as someone who does not and will never have blood family, BB-8 is super aware that that obligation is a fucking privilege.
And yeah. Kes knows that’s true. But he doesn’t really know what to do about it. But thanks, Beep Machine, your input is noted.
And this is why it’s worth it to slog through the bullshit and finish the fucking thing first, and then start posting it, because you can go back and make Kes a thing, instead of having him suddenly show up and get emo at the end.
