this is what i was talking about in the tags of the last reblog, btw, this fucking thing– they totally stole the look of this to make the binoculars for Star Wars props, and I think that’s hilarious.
There’s a bunch of stuff in both Star Wars and Star Trek like that. There’s a couple different Star Trek models that use razor handles for the engine nacelles. It’s 100% intentional, and it usually is a real thing that can be cheaply repurposed to save on costs in the model shop.
It’s also a real thing in most kinds of model building. Give me some surgical tubing, B.B. pellets, wire and a wire cutter and I can make cool stuff. Carbon fiber composite arrowshafts are cool shit too. Strapping tape is a god mode reinforcement for a lot of stuff.
Oh, light sabers were made out of flash tube handles, we had one come through a couple years back.
I just think it’s extra funny because at the time of the original series, those were approximately contemporaneous. But they’re trying to keep up the aesthetic, so they’re reaching even farther back into history for this one.
