here’s an adventures in online customer service dilemma:

this is actually a really common one. i mean. basically all of my convos on Etsy go verbatim exactly like this.

Customer: How much would it cost for me to buy qty X of Y thing you sell?

Me: Well, if you select Y from the drop-down menu (it’s choice Y), and then next to it, select the quantity of X, and then click “add to cart”, it’ll tell you.

I DO NOT KNOW how to have that conversation without sounding condescending. How do I do that? How do I not sound like an asshole? I DO want people to buy Y, I really do. But.

That is literally all you have to do. I don’t know why people can’t just do that and not send me a convo about it first? (To be fair, dozens of people a month do just that.)

But I really don’t know how else to answer them. It’s like… there are a number of options, there, in the drop-down menu. Pick the one that you want. Then choose the quantity. Then click Add To Cart.

I’m not going to fucking bust out a calculator and figure it out. I have dyscalculia, I am GUARANTEED to fuck that up. And Etsy doesn’t show me their location, which 99% of the time doesn’t matter, I have flat fees for domestic shipping, and then the 1% of the time I quote the flat fee it’s an international customer who doesn’t understand that I don’t know that.

I have this conversation literally weekly, often more than that.

I expect people to ask things like, “can you handle Z rare exception?” or “how long will it really take?” or even “how does it work, selling this service online?” but nobody asks that. Well, occasionally, but almost never.

They ask “can I get a quote” on something that’s a standard service listed right there. It’s. Right there. You have to know that, or you wouldn’t have known to send me a convo about it. These aren’t like, Google search queries.

I don’t know, man. I just don’t know.
