Oh wow you studied Russian!
I hope you remember more of it than I do of the Japanese I studied. I have… basically nothing left. I can’t even reliably read the basic phonetic script anymore. I feel awful letting all that angst and studying go to waste but it just… didn’t turn out to be something I could use…
Well, I’ll keep on with my cursed textbook and see if I can’t get through it. It’s probably right that I should pay real attention and devote time to mastering the handwritten script, because I’m likely to encounter that– Russians basically never write in block capitals, so anything that isn’t formally printed uses the handwriting and I’ll need both if they’re to be useful, but. Really.
I’m not actually all that interested in Russian for itself, is the hell of it. But if we travel to Latvia in a couple of years, we’ll be in a better situation if I have some Russian. And I need to master Cyrillic before I can make any attempts at Kyrgyz, so.
So I guess I’m learning Russian. Maybe it’ll come in handy for when they overthrow our government entirely…
In other news though, the guy whose blog I found and who I wrote to and who wrote back wrote back again, with actual concrete lodging recommendations and contact info, so I am pumped.
