MYSTERY BEEP FUCKING SOLVED

it’s not a smoke detector at all, it’s the cable box
why does our cable box have a battery when it’s also hard-wired into the mains
good question
the battery is not customer replaceable! nope. nor were we told about this.
so we have to call verizon and hope they can get someone out here to replace it before the alarm drives us nuts.
in the meantime though i’ve done so much research about smoke detectors you guys. it’s a damn shame we can’t actually have any smart devices in this house [there are both Reasons and just reasons, the just reasons being that the wiring hasn’t been updated since the 70s] because did you know you can get your nest smoke detectors to update your nest smart thermostat with occupancy information so the thermostat knows if you’re home and then can decide whether to run the program for people in the house or nobody in the house.
but how fucking creepy is that, your smoke detectors can give your thermostat data on where you are in your house at what times. and we have no legislation protecting us if that information is given to any other parties either, so we can rest easy knowing that there could be years’ worth of our behavior patterns stored up in wifi-enabled devices who know whether you like to fuck with the lights on or not. like, for real!
(your smart smoke detectors can be programmed to throw all the window shades open in the event of an alert so that emergency responders can see into your house. it can also tell your smart lights to all turn on so that you can see to evacuate, and so the whole neighborhood can watch you do so through your opened windows. amazing.)
(i was a fool to not already know all of this. of course your smart alarm opens your window shades. of course it does.)
