I am somehow reminded of the soundtrack from the movie Frank. Like Frank must have been influenced by this. and Yeah, I kinda dig it.

GOOD! I’m glad someone does. Maybe the Cosmic Message was for you! I’m glad it’s brought someone some joy.

I feel that it would have been considerably more amazing if you were listening to it while lying in a field on a warm ‘60s evening, drunk, stoned, mellow and convinced that the Age of Aquarius was just around the corner

Yes, this. Or like if you’re super into this genre, and have the context, and maybe then it’s got the intended magic for you.

I was thinking about it on my way home while listening to the tail-end of the album, and like, some bits of it are actually sort of similar to that one really psych Buffy Sainte Marie album. I gotta google it. Yeah! Illuminations. Came out one year later, in ‘69. Pioneered a shitton of like, electronic recording techniques and a bunch of innovations that later became popular. Really groundbreaking album. And I like that one, and yet, parts of it sound pretty similar to the Incredible String Band.

I thought about what the difference is for a while today, and I think it comes down to #1 Sainte-Marie has a more powerful voice and I like her choices as a vocalist better, and #2 she’s not like, fucking around with Exotic Instruments she’s borrowed from Exotic Cultures, she’s experimenting with new sound-making technologies, and #3, which I think is biggest for me, most of the songs have stories. Maybe it’s her background in country music, but her songs are mostly ballads. The two best songs on Illuminations, as I recall, and I haven’t relistened to it in probably a year, is one that’s the story of the Virgin Mary, and one that’s about a vampire, my god it’s so deliciously creepy. Oh the Keeper of the Fire song is good too, I like that one. (I just looked the album up to go back and put the links in.)

Maybe it’s that her songs are bangers, is the thing. They’ve got, like. Beats. And a groove.

I think that’s what I require from music. I require it to have a groove.

Also I just… sometimes psychedelic stuff sounds like someone halfassing an assignment and not doing the homework and being like “you just gotta go with it man” instead of actually thinking it through and making the fucking melody resolve, which I think is the part that I’m objecting to. And if I did more drugs maybe I wouldn’t be bothered by it as much, lol. Or if I weren’t such a tightass! I have like, zero chill, if that wasn’t clear.
