So. The upcoming trip (September, Kyrgyzstan). We’re not really doing a lot of preparation just now, but as we were researching, Dude read up on the cellular network there. There’s excellent coverage over most of the country, remote though it is, but it’s 2G. US cellphones are mostly 3G, and don’t do great there.
Dude got into a research spiral and bought himself a $70 antique Nokia (I mean, it’s new manufacture, it’s just. Antique technology). He’s unreasonably Into It, and has spent the morning reading up on how to design apps for it. It’s not a smartphone, but it can run a few limited apps. And Dude loves to research the beginning phases of how to make apps. So he’s spent the morning on that. The item itself will be delivered probably this afternoon with the mail.
He just took his first break of the day, to do this:
(more blather and a photo of some snowblowing behind the cut)
There’s a lot of snow out there. Ugh.
Meanwhile I’ve been doing laundry, starting on a tidying spree of the guestroom (where a lot of things have gotten dumped as I tidy the rest of the house), and have finished this, which is a hand-embroidered drop-shadow addition to a machine-embroidered text piece I started working on yesterday at work.
No, the humor inherent in the fact that I’m saying that but didn’t do any of the shoveling is not lost on me, but. I was doing the goddamn laundry ok.
It is February and that feels bad, man, it feels bad. I tried to make a grocery shopping list yesterday and spent an hour with a blank sheet of paper grinding my teeth at the thought that nothing sounds good to eat i don’t want food i don’t want anything let me just lie down and not think, which isn’t constructive.
Hey though, I survived January. And I’ve booked my first trip of the season to the farm, and I’ve convinced Dude to come with me to go to some of the Troy restaurants I talk about all the time but never go to with him.
Oh! And! Middle-Little got a Real Grown Up Job That Uses Her New MBA! Starts March 1. Pays like 15k/yr more than she’s making now. That’s still not really enough but hey! I’m gonna bring champagne and maybe one of the Nights Out with Dude will be getting takeout from Troy Kitchen and eating in her apartment like it’s a cocktail party or something.
Chita would like it known that she’s objecting to not being in this update and so is perched forbiddingly on the arm of the couch next to me watching with her eyes half-shut and her tail-tip curled over all four of her feet at once, doing her nine-and-a-half-pound best at Looming.
