Ha ha ha! The only time I have ever attempted to use Tumblr’s in-house tag-tracking or filtering code was when I first signed up, in like, 2012. I got a Tumblr expressly because people I knew from LJ’s Fatshionista community were doing Fatshion February photo posts, which were easier to do on Tumblr. (On LJ you had to host images somewhere, and it was a hassle.)
So I tracked the tag “fatshion february” when I first joined.
I have since un-tracked it. Several times.
Here’s the thing: the way that works, if you’re using the site on a mobile browser, is that it picks one post per day from that tag, and shows it to you every time it loads the page. So you’ve got your dash on endless scroll, and you get to the “show more posts” link, and you hit it, and it will load that post again, the same one it has decided is The One with that tag on it, in the first handful of posts it shows.
No matter what I do, that remains the case. So I have now seen about ten of the posts in that tag, which I no longer follow, one per day a dozen or more times each, and no other posts.
MEANWHILE, on my COMPUTER browser, it loads posts in that tag, tantalizingly, but as I scroll they disappear. So I have seen phantom glimpses of many many things in that tag, including some of the ones I’ve seen over and over on mobile, which is how I figured out what was going on.
For a tag I don’t track any more, and deleted last year while this nonsense was going on.
Just when you think you can appreciate what a fucking pile of steaming shit the code behind this site is, you gain a new appreciation. It is so bad.
Anyway. Happy Fatshion February; I’d participate, but it just seems like a bad idea.
