oh god windows is so awful

AWFUL

AWFUL

Mind, I’ve been a smug Mac OS user for like, a decade and a half? more? now? and their hardware has taken a sharp steep dive into crappiness. My laptop died and I realized it was equal $$ to replace it or repair it, but the new laptops I could buy were more expensive and had fewer features. So I opted for the $$$$ repair, because– I mean, I’d just buy a new computer, I could afford to, but the new ones have no usable ports and you have to buy an adapter in order to perform basic functions? for a thousand dollars more? and the processor isn’t any faster? so fuck that.

We’ve hit the point of late-stage capitalism where there’s no longer innovation. New phones aren’t better than my old one, just similarly un-maintainable. So I won’t replace my phone, I’ll look for another reconditioned one of the same model, used, when this one breaks, because I can upgrade the memory and replace the battery, and there’s no improvement in performance in the newer generations.

I’m feeling very weird about this. My whole life has been spent living in rapidly-advancing technology, and it’s utterly strange to face a world where there’s literally nothing new that I want. This last generation or two of upgrades have all been devoted not to innovating, not to making new indispensable technologies, but rather to consolidating the need to spend money. Improvements like… no headphone jacks… no replacement batteries… now you have to use the cloud service they specify…

It’s awful. I’m not talking about the misty eras of my bygone youth (my first phone was rotary), I’m talking about when I got my first smartphone less than a decade ago. And how before that I got my first phone that had a camera in it. And how before that I got my first phone that could text.

It’s fucked-up.
