this is why i don’t write fic by outlines
because i did sort of in this scene, i was like, ok, there’s gonna be a sex scene here, i need to sort of put a pin in that and move on and come back to it because i need to concentrate to write smut and can’t do it at work or while in a room with anyone else or anything
(i make really stupid faces, i know this is not uncommon. sometimes i make motions. nobody needs to see that. it’s not hot or interesting. it’s not even like i get hot and bothered, though that could be a factor, but like really, when i’m writing about sex i’m like 10% thinking about sex and 90% awkwardly stumped about choreography, and while i’m pretty sincere about all of it a great deal of it is not sex i actually would like, want to have with my own body, or anything, so.)
and so I stuck a pin there and moved on to the next bit, and mentally was like, “the characters make sweet and sort of formulaic love here, but i should probably describe it because it’ll fill out the rest of this chapter and give some good character notes, mm a bunch of sweetness and some lingering wistfulness, yeah that’s gonna be a good scene, don’t fade to black” and so i moved on to write the next bit after they’ve wistfully parted, and figure out some plotting details and such.
I came back to the scene today and was like ah yes, where’d i leave off– right, they were showering together and there was giggling. yes. very sweet.
so i sat down to write some more very sweet giggling/tickling/licking, you know, good stuff, and then suddenly character A started biting and that’s not a thing i’m into and i didn’t think they would be either but oh character B was into it and they’re not really sure what they’re doing either but this is suddenly a lot rougher and quite a bit more intense than I thought this scene was going to be
oh my gosh that’s going to leave marks you guys what are you doing this is not a dynamic that has really existed for these characters before, Character A has always been slightly subby if anything and now he’s fucking biting her and oh… but that kind of… yeah that works. that fixes a later dynamic issue i was having. yeah that’s. that’s a lot more insightful into both of their states of mind than the sweet giggly sex i was figuring on.
