I just watched a Kyrgyz movie (subtitled in English) on YouTube and recommend it. I can’t get the embed thing to work, but here’s the link, anyway.

Kurmanjan Datka, Queen of the Mountains

It’s about an actual historical figure in Kyrgyz history, who was a leader of her people and resisted the Russians before negotiating a peace with them in the late 19th century.

I need to read up on the history because I didn’t totally understand the story, but I really enjoyed the beautiful horses, amazing costumes, and lots of yurts. The acting was pretty great too, I thought– four different actors played the main character: a child, a young woman, an older woman, and a very old woman, just to span the character’s very long eventful life. She meets her husband when he, a high-ranking official, stops the execution of a woman suspected of adultery, saying there isn’t enough proof; when she’s promised to be married to a man she doesn’t respect, she literally sews the official a love note that her kid brother delivers for her, which is pretty badass. This gets paralleled when, aged about 60, she arises from her sickbed to pen a proclamation and prevent a rebellion among her people that would have been disastrous for them– but would have saved her son’s life.

Anyway. Phenomenal outfits, fantastic horsemanship, incredible scenery. I really like the guy who plays her husband, he’s got a really appealing face. Very stirring adventure. Great bit where she rides a horse off a cliff into the water. Some violence; you witness a beheading reflected in a copper jar, and there’s some war stuff, horses falling in dramatic slow motion and such.

I’m in serious lust with every costume in this movie, though. Gorgeous velvet coats all around, wool everything, fur hats, embroidery all over. And the horses– really beautiful horses, there’s a tiny moment with a “bad guy” character who realizes he’s doomed, gets off his beautiful blood-bay horse and whispers to it, “Goodbye, sweetheart,” before turning to fall in battle. Gloriously dramatic.

It’s a recent movie, too– 2014!
