@ people who write fic of siblings: we don’t constantly call each other “big sis” or “little brother” stop doing that

personally, I call my bro primarily ‘fuckface’

Goober is both of my brothers

Sibby. I also call her kidlet and kiddo. Mouse and fuzz she doesn’t like, so I don’t use them (anymore). I’ll also use her name. I’m very privileged to be the only person where she doesn’t mind if I call her her birth name.

My sisters and I had stupid nicknames for one another when we were young. (I was Bee or BeeGee or Beege, sometimes Bride or Bridie; I’ve never ever been Bridgie and that is the #1 way to get me to never speak to you, if you try it. But now I often go by B, and that’s how I address myself and refer to myself, though I don’t introduce myself that way much. My real name is fine, it’s just A Lot of consonants and weird narrow vowels, and I’m not very attached to it and an awful lot of words shouted at a distance sound just like it, and it’s annoying.)

One of Farmsister’s nicknames was “Annie”, though we didn’t use it much; by middle school she went by “Ann”. But at some point in college or just after, she decided she wanted to go by “Annie”, and it’s all her husband has ever called her. But she’d moved away, for college; we didn’t know, and so we kept calling her “Ann”. Now that I work with her in the summers, it’s noticeable, because everyone else in her life calls her “Annie”, including in news interviews and such. So I try to remember, but– it was years, we called her Ann, and I’ve actually apologized to her because I always forget, and people do comment on it!

So that would be an interesting character note, I think. We never use the goofy little-kid names– we called her Nan and Nan-Fan-Toot and Nannie too, but I’ve only ever done that to be extremely goofy as an adult, and never would in front of anyone work-related or official. But most of us, as her family, are stuck mentally on using her “I’m not a little kid” name from when she was first old enough to really express a preference, and haven’t caught up to her actual adult preference; it’s taken me two years now to get the habit of calling her “Annie” to other people.

But the idea that– it’s not someone being stubborn and refusing to acknowledge another person’s adult choices, it’s that when you grow up knowing someone you learn them in layers, and sometimes your default layer doesn’t match up with the most current one. Sometimes someone grows a lot while they’re away from you, and you still know them bone-deep but sometimes you don’t know them completely.
