Hey everybody! If you’ve been waiting for a good deal on Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey (the first by a woman in English!) it’s $4 on Amazon US right now.
I just started it, but it is eminently readable. There’s something… looser and more colloquial about it vs a translation like Fagles, which is counterintuitive because Wilson doesn’t stretch out her lines (she works one line of English for one line of Greek) like Fagles and other translators have. (One does not think of strict iambic pentameter as loose, but it is much more natural to English.)
Here are more reviews if you need help deciding: NYT, WaPo (by Madeline Miller, who has a new book coming out!), Atlantic. The NYT Magazine also did a long profile on Wilson.
Or you could just buy the thing because it’s $4 and it’s beautiful.
oh my god i got this for christmas and someone spent the whole $28 on it. buy it yourself now, I’m halfway through and I love it.
