myguitarandallofyourshoes said: 2/6) Rey’s still adjusting to water showers and not being on Jakku, and one of the first mornings (like the third or fifth), she’s just taken a shower and her hair is down and she’s staring in the mirror, at her hair around her shoulders, and it just hits her–she’s been doing her hair the same way for fifteen years, everytime it had fallen out too much while working to survive on that junkyard planet, the same way so that her family would know that it was her. So that they could find her again

(3/6) And now she’s on this Not-Jakku, with so much green and so much water, where everyone seems to trust everyone else and there’s so much food everywhere (she keeps stashes around their quaters, on her at all times), and she realizes her family is never going to find her. They are never coming for her. They won’t recognize her now. She left. And she starts crying, sobbing, what a waste of water but what does it matter she’ll never find them again.

(4/6) And Poe comes into the fresher and sees her, asking what’s wrong? what happened? and she can’t explain it, getting out the words “hair” and “gone” and “never,” but Poe gets it, at least a little. Sees himself staring at his reflection in the mirror the week after his wife died, when he realized he’d never see her again, and never slick his hair back or wear his altered respirator chip to make her smile, never see her smile.

(5/6) So he guides her, gently, into their quaters, gets a comb (because dammit, he knows hair), and braid her hair a new way for her. Intricate, won’t fall down, new pattern, for this Not-Jakku. She lets him, and now she doesn’t need to think about it. Later that day, she’s blunt and fierce and Rey, talking to the general and learning about the resistance and arranging the trip to find luke.

6/6) Poe doesn’t bring up the morning, or comment when the braid lasts four days, but on the fifth day he does it for her again, differently. It becomes their ritual, almost. The first thing she’s truly accepted as a gift, and not a bargain (At least that Finn didn’t give her). Each time its different, always functional, never three buns. He shows her how to do it herself. So when she leaves, he does it for her again. A new home and family to carry with her, until she makes it back to them.

Aw this is very sweet. I like this a lot! Thank you for sharing it with me!
