This is even worse for derby friends.

One year my then-team captain made a point to start calling us all by our real names in the off-season… but there were like, six Danielles and four Jennifers, and it was too confusing. (Most confusingly, she was really named Elizabeth but went by Merry as a skate name [Merry Mayhem!] and everyone thought her real name was Mary, and suddenly she was Elizabeth? What?)

To this day I have friends I call Crazy, Chops, Legs, Courage, Grapes, Fistie, Brawl, Toots… I mean, I know their real names, but like, I know five Megans, why’m I gonna waste a good nickname like Chops? Can you believe Toots is really Caroline? No way. I’m sticking with Toots.

I just get called B, and I like it so much I’m glad it’s spread to non-derby people. B! B. That’s me!
