I would put it somewhere around Brockport at the northern edge and Hornell in the south.
You know, that’s more thought than I’d really given it. LOL I had to look up Hornell, I know I’ve been there but I couldn’t remember where it was. Of course it’s on the 390. I’ve been up and down the 390 more times than I care to contemplate.
I think you’re about right. The first big debate I had about it was at a competition where the Western NY division included Syracuse, and we fought bitterly about it but then all of us had to band together against the Accurs’d Downstaters.
I think if you follow the 390 line that’s a pretty good boundary, because the chunk where it wavers westward is the Finger Lakes and they’re super into having their own region.
Just to be a shit-stirrer, though, when we were having a discussion about this the other day, my dude was like “what if Rochester is Finger Lakes, not Western,” and I had to violently reject that because ain’t no finger lakes in Rochester. That’s Lake Ontario, friendo, which is a whole other thing.
We all do know fine well, however, of course, that Downstaters really think that everything north of Yonkers is one wide wilderness about ten miles square full of cows and stuff, and they’re not even really aware that there *is* a Western NY, let alone where it self-defines its boundaries. (And honestly, Albany is mostly downstaters who somehow fail to notice just how long they had to drive to get there.)
Oh one realness aside here, I would say the line between Upstate and Downstate is south of Poughkeepsie somewhere but I recently had occasion to drive from Troy to Rhinebeck, and holy shit we hit a Downstate wall, I was like, Toto, we’re not Upstate anymore. So now I don’t know where the line is.
