oh in chicken news– so, when I bought my 30 Fancy Hens to throw in with the new egg-laying flock, remember, I got a free Bonus Fancy Chick too?

Bonus Fancy was large and fuzzy from the beginning, and fast, hard to pin down or ID. But she’s finally big and distinctive-looking enough that we could start trying to ID what she was.

Well, I meant to, anyway, but the only photo I got was this one, which is hella blurry:

She’s right in the middle, looking toward the camera, yellow-beaked and patchy. Notably, she’s got this really thick neck, like she’s got a bunch of extra feathers under her chin.

Well. Farmsister was reading an article about backyard chicken husbandry, thinking to send it to our older sister who’s thinking about getting a backyard flock, and it had a bunch of photos of chickens, and she realized:

Bonus Fancy’s an Ameraucauna!

I stole that one from Google Image Search. Look at her, though! What a furious little angry reptile. I can’t wait. The beard is fabulous, and is what makes me unquestioningly certain that’s what Bonus Fancy is.

But Dude is extra-excited, because these guys lay blue or green eggs, and he thinks that’s so keen. I told him we could take Bonus Fancy home and have a single pet chicken live in our sunporch, but he said no. Not even the prospect of one green egg a week (they’re notoriously poor layers) would entice him to consider this. (IDK if our zoning allows it, i’m sort of refusing to look it up, because if it does, well– gosh.)

So… the farm will have maybe one in a thousand eggs be green, if Bonus Fancy turns out any good. Good luck with that, guys. Dude thinks they should mix the green ones right in with the regular brown->white ones, and have it be like, a secret bonus. If you get a Bonus Fancy egg, well, then you should tag us on Facebook to get a coupon or something. I’m still working on what exactly.

Aha!

Also wow, how lucky! That is the breed of chicken I would own RIGHT NOW, if I could own chickens; I've wanted some for years.

Enjoy your Bonus Fancy Green Eggs (with ham?).
