I just went to see Thor: Ragnarok despite not having seen literally any of the other Thor movies. I dragged my dude along too, because I like to do things with him. He also has not seen any of the Thor movies. But, like me, he’s seen Avengers, and like, one or two other MCU movies, so. I was like, I’m sure you don’t need anything else. You know who everybody is.
And sure enough, it was fine.
It was exactly what the Internet promised. It was a fun romp, there was some cutting commentary (where do you think all this gold came from?), and all the actors were excellently-used in their roles. Like, Jeff Goldblum? Was he even acting? That was phenomenal. And Cate Blanchett was clearly just having a blast the entire time. Even Karl Urban got his licks in, standing around in eyeliner looking deeply uncomfortable– he’s so good, I cared about him for like ten seconds in 2004 holy Christ that movie came out in 2002 and I’m glad he’s still so good.
(Hang on I gotta recover from Googling The Two Towers. Holy shit you guys. What.)

Tessa Thompson was a revelation. The catwalk down the rainbow bridge with the fireworks and the sword that I’ve seen like a thousand gifs of– *kisses fingers*
I won’t go on about it any more, there’ve been cleverer things said by people who cared a lot more than me. I liked it a lot. And they used the hell out of Immigrant Song, A++.
Dude was like, “but that wasn’t a good movie?” and I was like, “it was exactly what I wanted out of a movie, you know they don’t all have to be a steak fucking dinner”, but I seriously can’t think of what else or more I could have wanted there. I mean, I think in my heart I’m kind of done with superhero movies, but.
Oh the trailers beforehand– let me tell you, about 90% of them were what you’d make if you’d like painstakingly researched and delved straight into my id to find a collection of images and sounds I absolutely would not want to see any more of, and the other 10% had John Boyega in them. Oh and Black Panther. I wanna see that. I didn’t realize what it was a trailer for until suddenly there was Chadwick Boseman smirking and I was like oh fuck yes.
But. Other than that. I think I’m pretty done with superhero flicks, and the fireworks-catwalk-sword thing was a fitting swan song.
But. I mean. We’ll see, as ever.
(Meanwhile Dude just got done rewatching Twin Peaks from start to end including the movie, so, like, what he thinks is good is probably because his brain is melted. I only cared about Laura Dern’s manicure by the end of that.)
