my sister wants to get potato seeds but they’re not reliable for basically any variety. you gotta get seed potatoes, and those are heavy and prohibitive to ship. it’s so expensive.
Yeah, last year I got 2.5 lbs of seed potato and it cost me just as much to get them shipped as it did to buy them. But they produced around 20 lbs of potatoes so I came about even cost with store bought and the potatoes tasted amazing so I’m going to expand potato production next year, do two or three varieties
for me, I’m ok with the inconsistency of true potato seed because I’m going to be the one eating them and I baby my experiments pretty well. I’m also good about isolations and such so I suspect I can get them isolated and maybe do some breeding selection but who knows! It’s garden scale stuff, you know?
Most of my plots this year were like ten square feet and I’ve gotten some decent yields out of some, enough for one person which isn’t all that much.
yeah, garden scale stuff is just such a different concern… I used to have an intensive garden in my backyard here but I just couldn’t keep it up. I miss gardening.
But, now I have access to the farm, and they have a proper greenhouse, so. Veg Manager is good at experiments and such. He had artichokes he started in pots and then moved outdoors– and the experiment yielded enough that he could give them out to all 110 subscribers, so that was pretty exciting!
i guess they’re making progress with potato seeds, so I’m excited to know how well you do.
I am trying to convince Sister and Veg Manager to grow sweet potatoes again next year, but the deer are so fond of them that I’m probably going to have to set up a stand and guard them if they deign to grow them, lol.
