16) are there any characters who haunt you?

ooh by “haunt”, that depends what you mean. Most of the characters I’ve written do “haunt” me while the works are still active, in that I think about them a whole lot and often perceive my daily life from their perspective. I’m distracted a lot, ok. Normally I move on but at any time I can kind of reread old stuff and get back into a character a bit, so. If that’s what you mean by “haunt” then, yes.

In the meaning of a haunting being something sort of unpleasantly clinging, then, maybe; I do have characters I’ve never done right by coming back to bother me a fair bit. And before I’ve written something, there’s often a lot of preoccupation with a character, that may or may not ever amount to anything.

24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?

Oh man. Yeah, I mean. I do a lot of Wikipedia reading, and many times I’ll branch out from that and find more exact/primary sources on something, and I’ll definitely seek out experiences that go along with it– like, eating the cuisine a character would cook, even if that means buying the ingredients and cooking it myself, or going to a museum exhibit about the thing, or what have you.

This is always complicated, though, by two factors, one being my inability to do things on my own without involving other people for support or to make up numbers or whatever (like, I won’t cook for myself and I won’t go to the museum by myself probably), and the other being a pathological inability to own up to being interested in something that I’m seriously interested in. I always have to come at it sidelong, like, picking an unrelated but cool thing and pretending I’m super into that, and only really looking intensely at My Desired Interest really close-up when no one is actually paying attention and pretending the whole time that I was interested in something else.

(Like, I will die to death in real life before letting any family member know that I’m super into Poe Dameron both as a character and because Oscar Isaac is attractive, but I will be publicly obsessed with BB-8 to an alarming degree because kids think that’s funny and I absolutely don’t have to own up to how much character I’ve imbued the droid with in my head.)

The side-answer to this whole question, though, is how many things have you found a way to incorporate into a story because you already knew about them, and the answer is, uhh like all of the things. [How many characters of mine are into sewing? Lots. Like, embarrassingly lots. And like. This hardly counts because so many fandoms have military characters who by necessity are into guns, but, like, guns were considered a necessary life skill in my household so it’s kind of nice not to have to do separate research there.]

(the questions are here if anyone still wondered about anything thank you everyone who asked I have enjoyed this a lot)
