If you go to Phoenix, I highly recommend the Heard Museum for both historical and contemporary Native American art. Phoenix has a standard Euro-heritage art museum, too, which sometimes has cool stuff, but check ahead re exhibits.

I’ll try that again: it’s been a few years since I’ve been to AZ, but I can make some suggestions–look up average temperatures for different times of year online, for the different places you might go. I *think* Phoenix in January is likely to be temperate. Grand Canyon in January might actually be shut due to snow. Check if the park has a website with temperature info for planning your trip.

Oh yes, the South Rim is open, and the North Rim does not have any lodgings or anything open, and many of the access roads are closed from Oct-May. So.

I went to Phoenix and Tucson when I was little, and I remember most of it as kind of a blur, but I know it was cool.

Dude is not quite as into museums as I am. I could do a whole vacation that was just looking at museums and then eating at restaurants interspersed with lie-ins in hotel rooms, but he’s… well, I’m never sure how much he’s enjoying himself when we do that, so. I don’t know, I think most of the challenge of this is going to be getting him to explain what he actually wants.

Let me tell you about my ideal vacation, though, I say now, as I prepare to drive back across the state after having spent this week cooking and doing laundry:

My ideal vacation is that I go somewhere niceish, where there’s a bedroom I can sleep in, and a porch I can sit on and look out into some really nice woods and maybe a lake or something, and a sitting room with a desk where I can sit and write, and someone cooks dinner and maybe I help and maybe I don’t, and then we all eat dinner and have a nice time and then go to bed.

Is that a vacation like a person could have? I don’t know, but I love the idea of it.

More concretely, I’d really just like a four or five-day stretch at home in my own house where I can get through my laundry, put things away, tidy up, and maybe do a sewing project (gasp), but in order for that to happen I’d need to spend a week with a crew of three just cleaning this house so I could find my shit in the first place.
