hah aha i just sort of idly poked at the final-ish draft of Home Out In The Wind– I’m doing final-final edits in Scrivener, after having collated the thing on Google Docs, and it was hard to get a wordcount when it was in different documents. When I pasted it into the chapters on Scrivener, it was almost exactly 60k. I have done some editing since then, some of it substantive, so I just selected all the chapters to see, and it’s 73k now.
I told you, I can’t cut length in an edit. Ugghghghghg.
Anyway. 73k instead of 60. I’m afraid to even count the other half, which is still in Gdocs and in pieces.
It’s okay. Y’all were already into a six-figure wordcount, what’s a little more?
I can’t believe I only have 25,000 words of it posted. Y’all. Y’all. This fucking novel.
Here’s one of the new bits, which will be in chapter 4:
Arana smiled. He was a reasonably attractive fellow, dark-haired and with a wide, generous mouth that gave him an easygoing look. “The thing about Poe is that he has a great deal of surface flash, and outward displays of showy, relatable emotions, because he’s actually a really complicated guy and sort of doesn’t like it when people figure that out. So he’s really all about putting the parts of himself he wants people to know about right out on display, so they don’t look too close at the rest of him.”
“Huh,” Finn said, blinking as that realigned a few of his impressions into something more coherent. “Oh.”
“Yeah,” Arana said, “oh. Everyone thinks they know everything there is to know about him because he just puts it right out there. His Mom and Pop were Rebellion war heroes. He was top of his class at the Academy in a bunch of subjects, and was also a party animal. He’s an excellent pilot. He can fly anything. He doesn’t drink much. He sounds like he’s from one of the Core Worlds, maybe Corellia or somewhere like that.”
“Does he?” Finn asked. He considered it. He didn’t know much about the Core. He’d spent his whole life in the Unknown Regions, pretty much. “Where is he from?”
“Yavin 4,” Arana said. “And he’ll tell anyone who asks, he doesn’t hide it. But most people don’t really put that together. Yavin is where the Battle of Yavin was, and that’s important, and people kind of absent-mindedly think of Yavin as somewhere important.”
“Is it?” Finn asked, because he honestly had no idea.
“No,” Arana said. “It’s in the Outer Rim and it’s not even particularly close to any major hyperlanes.”
Finn had heard disparaging comments about Outer Rim backwaters. They’d mostly been context-free, for him, but he’d put together what people probably meant from it anyway. “Is it nice?” he asked, because he really didn’t know.
Arana laughed. “No,” he said.
It took me forever to find Yavin on a map. It’s in a sector called the Gordian Reach. And like, the thing is, you’d think, it’s space right, you can just fly in straight lines. But you can’t, you’ve got to follow set routes that avoid things like gravity wells and black holes and the like. Yavin is in the middle of fucking nowhere.
I didn’t manage to fit this in, but Arana is the only one of Poe’s friends from the Academy that he ever took home with him during a school break, because he was too self-conscious about his Exotic Weird Backwater Jungle Homeworld and his Embarrassing Dad to let any of his other friends come visit.

Wandering around the SW Wikia page for Yavin 4, someone clearly had too much time on their hands because Yavin 4 has a bunch of colorfully-named but terribly poorly-described fauna. Woolamanders? Leviathan grubs? Whisper birds? A lot of them are circularly-described, like, what’s a runyip? it eats stintarils. what’s a stintaril? it gets eaten by runyips. Uh. Thanks so much?
I bet Poe has at least one hookup where the person says obnoxiously exotifying shit about him being a delicate jungle flower and Poe is like mm hmm sure and ghosts out of there while the other person’s in the shower
