I got tired of angst and let myself do fluff for a minute.
Shara sat up on one elbow to look around. “What’s so great about this spot?”
“Lots of things,” Kes said, not sitting up. “Close to water but not so close as to be prone to flooding. Good soil. Natural break in the forest, far enough out to be fairly unattractive to the leviathan grubs. Not a lot of natural predators. Nice open ground. Great spot for a house.”
“Were you really thinking of a house already,” she said softly, amazed but not really surprised. Kes was always thinking of a lot more things than he let on.
“I wasn’t planning, no,” he said. “But I was daydreaming.” He sat up on an elbow. “For the record, this isn’t the only place I daydreamed a house.”
“You were daydreaming houses the whole time,” she said. She really hadn’t expected that.
“I’ve been daydreaming houses my whole life,” he answered, and lay back down.
It was too much, and she rolled over and put her head on his shoulder. “Kes, baby,” she said, “you want a house here, I’ll build you a house. I don’t know shit about houses but I’ll find out.”
He put his arm around her. “I know how to build a house,” he said. “It’s okay. “We can do it together.”
She had to kiss him, then, and he kissed her back, and she climbed onto him and made out with him until she felt like maybe she’d absorbed some of his planetsider glow, because she was all lit up too, bright and full and sparkling with energy. He put his hands under her shirt and she was about to let him take her clothes off but then she paused and sat up, looking down at him.
“What kind of bugs are here?” she asked suspiciously. “Am I going to get stung in personal places if we fuck in the grass?”
He laughed, and laughed, and he was so pretty she almost stopped caring about the bugs, but she had a deep ingrained suspicion about creepy crawly planetside nonsense, and while fucking him was about her favorite thing in the universe, she did not want something to sting her most private parts.
