Another hectic day, but I got a waffle at the farmer’s market, and got to sit and read to Farmbaby, and read all of Charlotte’s Web to myself– I had forgotten what a weird little book that was– and got a bunch of calendula harvested and set up a lot of drying racks up in the granary so I can do a massive dried-herb harvest this week. This coming week will be a huge push to preserve summer’s harvest– from flower petals and heads for potpourri, to herbs for cooking, to cucumbers pickled, corn frozen, maybe beans frozen, maybe get some eggplant pickled and freeze some melon– it’s not a slaughter week, but my older sister’s coming up from Maryland and they’ll be all over the place. Still, as good a time as any to work on preserving.

In the late afternoon, Farmsister and her husband and Farmbaby got all dolled up and went to Assistant Livestock Manager’s wedding.

So Middle-Little sister came over, and she and I made some plans, and then I went back to her apartment and did a photoshoot on her balcony so she could have professional-ish LinkedIn headshots for her post-MBA-acquisition job search. Then we went out for Moroccan food, and made further plans.

Worth mentioning, again, that Middle-Little’s apartment, cat, and balcony were stolen along with an event that happened to her to use in a Poe/Finn A/U. So, for anyone curious, here is me on the balcony with Wednesday, whose balcony-leaping, breaking-and-entering-the-lower-apartment antics inspired the whole story.

Isn’t she majestic. M-L said she’s got yet another new downstairs neighbor, and she went and said hi and said also, if you leave your back door ajar my cat will break into your apartment, I hope you don’t mind but a Friend comes with the apartment, and fortunately the new neighbor seemed delighted, so. That’s two people who’ve come and gone since the sweet young man who used to sit on the back porch and smoke cigarettes and pet Wednesday and feed her bits of his breakfast. She had a whole ritual with him and seems to sort of still miss him. She likes to go down into the yard and Yell Things, but in a sweet way not a horrible-cat-screams kind of way, so nobody really minds.

Now I’m back out at the yurt, and Whiskey the Yurt Cat has gleefully Discovered me again.

I can’t see Dolores– today’s brief downpour leaked in the central hole a little, and I think the water damaged her web, and I’m a bit concerned it drove her away. I’ve become fond of her, especially since I learned that if she lays eggs they won’t hatch until spring. (The barn spiders all have egg sacs hatching now which no thank you please.) In her current absence there’s a juvenile wolf spider wandering around the roof near her usual place and I’m not best pleased. I hope she eats him, I’m not in the mood to make new friends.

For a huge-ass spider, she sure goes missing a lot. I can’t believe I can’t find her at will, but I honestly don’t know where the hell she is.

Oh weird two of my rafters are poking through into the roof ring and shouldn’t be. I’ll have to take a look at that in daylight tomorrow. Could explain why the thing’s settled a little unevenly. We’ve had so much wind the last couple days, it’s not surprising some things have rattled themselves out of place.

I’m so boring lately. I hope tomorrow I’ll get a chance to kind of catch up on things a little. I don’t think anyone cares, but I want to show some photos of how well zinnia petals keep their color when dried. I just think they look so neat!
