My queue’s run out and I just don’t have time to refill it just now.

I did just spend a couple of hours cleaning and organizing in the yurt. I’ve tried to re-negotiate with my roommate Dolores the spotted orb weaver spider, too. We’ll see; she was sulking in hiding the whole time, but I see her again now. I discovered that orb weavers typically hide all day and sit on their webs all night, and also eat and re-make their webs daily, so she’s honestly not really fazed by me breaking her web every day. I just should be careful to leave the strands attached so she can eat them; they recycle the proteins that way. I think she really is doing a bang-up job of chasing off other spiders, though while I was reorganizing I terrified a young male wolf spider who scrambled off under my bed. As long as he doesn’t come up onto the bed, we’re cool.

I ordered a mattress– a cheap one, but not an air mattress– and it’ll arrive Wednesday. Dude is visiting for the first time since I set the yurt up with the expanded walls next weekend, so I’m motivated to get the thing set up nicely before then. Rearranged all the furniture, and I should take some pictures. Maybe tomorrow. I promise I’m not crazy to live in a ger in the woods, it’s actually really cozy and quite pleasant.

Whiskey my little yurt pal has come out to visit tonight for the first time this season, which is delightful except that her mortal nemesis Beans has also come out to visit, so Beans periodically pops in and Whiskey hisses at her and they growl at each other for a while before Beans retreats, since Whiskey’s well-entrenched upon the bed.

We had a truly epic flower-arranging session today, both for market and for the upcoming wedding of the Assistant Livestock Manager. I spent a long time pulling the petals off of all our deadheaded zinnias so that Farmbaby can toss them as the flower girl. I also saved a bunch of the petals to dry and use in potpourris this autumn. I’m going to start making potpourris pretty soon; I want to have a small selection on offer before the flowers go away, and ramp up dramatically once the flowers are gone, in hopes of replacing some of the income those flowers generate– plus, the more dried flowers I use as ingredients, the more use we can get out of the flowers we *do* have. Plus an expansion of the dried flower arrangements and wreaths we did last year is certainly in order. I really need to finish cleaning out the last remaining corners of usable space in the granary, and maybe set up drying racks in the big barn loft too, which is unused indoor space, it’s just hard to get to. There’s no reason not to use the garden as intensively as possible while it’s in season, so that we’ll have things to use when the garden’s dormant. This is my job, and one that I keep pushing aside to do the day-to-day shit instead of focusing on.

The day-to-day shit is what keeps us alive, though, so.
