I woke up at 3:30am and haven’t been able to get back to sleep (for some reason it is intensely humid and gross in this yurt and the weather report does not reflect this, i was not prepared) so here, have a random brain dump.

i posted to twitter last night about this, but the spider in my roof ring is really trying to take over the whole middle of the yurt. I’ve named her Dolores, and I’d post a portrait of her but she won’t pose and also I think people don’t like pictures of spiders. Anyway she’s a Spotted Orb Weaver although she doesn’t look like the main picture on that page (what an ugly picture!), she looks like most of the other photos of the species.

I tried to have a talk with her last night about where exactly she’s attaching this web of hers, and how maybe she could try attaching it not right where I walk every day, but she doesn’t use spoken forms of communication or any language I can discern so I doubt this is going to work. I should have named her Charlotte, because surely the titular character in Charlotte’s Web is an orb weaver, given the style of web…

I’ve been getting up at dawn to harvest flowers the last couple of days and it’s almost time to get up again, but i’ve been awake just long enough that I’m almost ready to fall asleep again and I’m just so tired, ugh.

Today we’re finally arranging the flowers for the wedding this weekend, so once that’s done I’ll be able to relax a little bit. I’ve been unable to help much with the harvesting so I keep filling my day with odd jobs. Sister pointed out that I’m both a blessing and a curse for them, because when they’re trying to calculate their costs, my labor is invisible and goes unaccounted-for, but it’s also indispensable and so if they were paying me the fair wage they want to be, they’d have to be charging a lot more in the end for various things– but, they can’t, so. Anyway, yesterday I harvested flowers, packed eggs, washed vases, and went to the post office to pick up a box that was peeping, then put away baby chicks, found chick feed by exploring (I didn’t know where it was kept and it hadn’t been put out for me), drove to Stephentown and back, did dishes and laundry and read to the toddler, cleaned and set up a space for today’s flower arranging session (the bride and bridal party are arranging bouquets too? idk, it’s a whole Thing), made refreshments to serve during the flower arranging, cleaned up the kitchen with my sister while she complained and banged around, then cleaned myself up so i could attend a gala dinner thing for the nonprofit that organized most of the grants that allowed my sister to buy this farm in the first place.

there wasn’t a lot of online time in that, or time to myself really, and i badly wanted to take a nap through half of it. today is going to be much the same. my only consolation is that the farm family is all going to the rehearsal dinner for tomorrow’s wedding and i am not, so i can sleep.
