Shit. That sounds really awful. And your chickens are free-range, right, so no way you can put them in netted areas. :( Peacocks always strike me as more trouble than they’re worth. idk about feral, they’re native here and certainly not domesticated.
Well– the treaty is why a lot of species aren’t extinct, so I don’t object to it too much. The chickens are actually pastured, because otherwise they’d just be eaten– so they are in an enclosure, but the hawks and owls can get in, and if the net isn’t fine enough, they yank the chicks through it. Compared to the coyotes, though, even the problem hawks and the obsessed owl didn’t kill that many.
Peacocks are extremely noisy but around here, the plumes are worth a bunch of money. I want to use feathers in the dried flower arrangements and other things we do, so I want to get some pretty-feathered chickens to mix in with the egg chickens. But peacocks would really kick that up a bunch.
Around here, though, it’s too cold for them in winter; they could die, or lose toes. They can’t be kept with chickens, because chickens can harbor a parasite that’s harmless to them but kills game birds. BUT, turkeys have the same weakness. I’d been considering trying to raise peacocks with the turkeys this year, but the turkeys don’t have that long a lifespan. HOWEVER! Next year B-I-L wants to raise heritage turkeys, who live a lot longer before they mature, and that would involve constructing them a whole elaborate pen, and I could TOTALLY throw peacocks in there with them. And the peas could probably room with the pigs over the winter, especially if we built a better pig house and put a perch in it. That would be plenty of body heat to keep them from freezing in the winters!
