mccain voted no??? I mean who am i and what do i know about anything, especially USA politics, but… O_O
Yes!!!!! He joined with the two centrist Republican women and the Democrats against sabotaging Obamacare!
He has the reputation of a maverick, but actually a pretty middle of the road conservative voting record, so you never know. Now and then he breaks with party, but nothing like the real mavericks like Susan Collins (GOP senator from a blueish state).
And—okay, so he’s got brain cancer, and in his announcement, he was like, I AM NOT GIVING UP, MY ENEMIES IN THE SENATE SHOULDN’T CHEER TOO HARD YET, and the GOP was talking about how they’d personally roadtrip with him to get him to the Senate for the vote (w/o him they didn’t have enough). And then he supported the motion to bring the vote to the Senate floor when the two centrists didn’t, which looked bad (he wasn’t considered a very likely swing vote, esp after his senatorial bff agreed to support it). And then while the politicking was going down on the Senate floor, he said that he’d decided which way he was going to vote but everyone would just have to wait and see. And then he started hanging out with the centrists and went over to the Democrats, and our Senate leader apparently actually said FUCK :D :D :D.
So at this point, it … kinda looks like he voted to proceed specifically so he could fuck over the GOP and Trump before he dies, in the most public way possible.
And for context, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, the two female centrist repubs, have been being treated horribly to the point of threats of violence from coworkers. The Interior Secretary actually called Murkowski up, Mafia-style, to tell her Trump was displeased with her voting record, see, and that’s a nice state she’s got there, see, and it’d be a shame if something were to happen to its federal funding, see?
So on the one hand, it sucks that McCain’s getting all the credit for this, but on the other hand, it’s a big deal, he wasn’t seriously expected to swing because for all he bitches constantly about how reprehensible everything is and how badly it’s all being done, he has literally never not rubber-stamped for Trump before.
The man is 80 and has possibly-terminal cancer, so they can’t really threaten him with much, but he’s also never put his money where his mouth is before, so I remain skeptical.
