i am so tired and i need to go and be working on something but i can’t motivate myself to do so, and i’m being lazy. blah.
placeholder of tiny story thoughts of probable baby poe stories– this is inspired by yesterday being a lovely day so we hauled Farmbaby’s toys out of the basement and put them back in the yard, and she became totally preoccupied with having a tea party on the tiny picnic table that goes in the yard. (there’s a fenced-in side yard full of toys, for her to play with but also for the kids who come by twice a week for the vegetable subscription pickup, mostly to keep playing children from running into the driveway. It’s remarkably effective.)
so: yavin iv tea parties
alderaan has a whole thing about tea. maybe british-ish, maybe japanese-ish, but there’s a whole elaborate ceremony about tea, and there are levels of it, but even just a basic cup of tea, an alderaanian is going to have a maybe absent-minded but still-present ritual about it.
kes is born on alderaan but doesn’t spend much time there, being a refugee and all; still, the whole tea thing’s a situation he’s noddingly familiar with, mostly in the way of a child accepting that the world just works that way sometimes and not worrying about it much. he was often at very formal occasions and spent a lot of time bored out of his mind and focusing his entire self on not fidgeting too much. so he knows how the tea thing goes, but not in any focused way.
yavin iv, right after the war, becomes a haven for the alderaanian diaspora, the few survivors who were either studying abroad or traveling or whatever when the genocide happened. many settle there, and so there are some cobbled-together things, a little bit of a community. leia mostly stays away to keep from attracting too much attention to them, but it’s a thing.
while playing with poe kes absent-mindedly puts together a rudimentary tea set for him, because he remembers playing with one as a child, remembers that tea parties were a fun thing. so one day, he’s home with poe, it’s a nice day, so he says kid, let’s have a tea party, and poe is super pumped and helps him set the table, and he gives poe a container with sides as a tray since the kid’s going to spill otherwise, and puts all the formal dishes– cobbled together odd dishes and appropriately-shaped containers, but maybe he took a moment’s effort and dunked them all in the same color paint so they’re a “set”– on that tray and Poe gets to carry it, and they put a proper tablecloth (probably a napkin) on the picnic table, and Kes mixes up some syrup in water or something to be tea, because whatever, and brings himself a beer, and they sit down and Kes has to pull over a chair because the child-sized toy table is Not Happening (shara can sit at it but he Cannot) and there’s a little plate of cookies and a cut-up space-apple or whatever, two or three toys propped up at the table to be the rest of the guests
and they’re sitting there and Kes teaches Poe the whole formal way you’re supposed to pour, you offer the handle to the drinker, you go sunwise around the table, the whole thing
(and when Poe’s not looking he dumps the syrup out of his cup and pours his beer in because he is a grown-ass man and is not drinking sugar water on a hot afternoon)
and they pass quite an agreeable little time, teaching the toys Alderaanian etiqutte (though, Kes wasn’t really setting out to do that, he just never drank tea on his home planet, so when he thought of a tea party of course it was an Alderaanian one)
and naturally some distinguished visitor happens to drop by, and comes out and there’s Kes in the middle of a whole formal Alderaanian high tea with stuffed animals and a three-year-old
tl;dr he made some old lady cry for her vanished planet because he didn’t even notice he was preserving a vanished culture for the benefit of two action figures, a little boy, and a stuffed animal, with a beer in his tea cup (he didn’t let on about that part)
[yes in real life i drank a can of beer in tiny sips out of a miniature ceramic teacup in the yard yesterday, i have photos]
