Sometimes writing is like having an enormous lake in your head, and you want to get it out of your head and into a proper place for a lake so other people can come and go swimming and ride jet skis and stuff, except all you have to move the lake is a teaspoon. So you’re just sitting there frantically flinging water out of the lake with your teaspoon and telling people, “Guys, this lake is going to be so cool when it’s done,” but it will never be done. There is so much lake.
#this is…..so hashtag relatable #there is so much lake#and the more water you fling out of the lake the more water you realize is in the lake#the lake is so full of lake #it is so full of lake all the time#and then you look over to the left and realize—HOLY SHIT THERE IS ANOTHER LAKE#it is so blue and beautiful and wow you totally want to work on spooning THAT lake out of your head#but you haven’t even finished with the first lake#and so you’re just sort of sitting here on the muddy ground surrounded by small bathing pools#“these pools are so refreshing!” people say “I’d love to swim in your lake sometime!”#“SO WOULD I” you howl forlornly into the night clutching your teaspoon#about me
And sometimes you do manage to make a whole lake and you realize about halfway through that process– and the process took a long time because you started one lake and then had this great idea for a second lake and it’s only as you’re nearly done with the first lake and really deep in the second lake and you’ve started a third and fourth lake and your progress is slowing and you’re a little overwhelmed– it’s about that time that you realize that the more you spoon out of that fucking lake, the more goes into that fucking lake, and if you look around for advice on what to do everyone’s giving you helpful tips on starting a lake and you fucking know how to start a lake all right, your problem is that you have like four huge fucking lakes here and you can’t possibly finish them all and the water’s flowing faster now and you can’t control it very well, and a lot of your effort is going into making lakes that are so ambitious that they can’t be used until they’re completed, and sometimes people are mad because you say there’s a lake and why can’t they go to the lake but you didn’t make the steps part yet so nobody can get to this lake but you, and people are like,
“I read this great article about how to start making a lake,”
and you maybe scream.
