apropos of nothing in particular, remember how I was getting into distilling? So I did some of that while I was working on painting signs. I picked literally the only building on the farm without running water, but my brother in law was kind enough to sling me a hose to use– threading it through the window of the old barn, so that it was suspended over a running stream, pretty entertaining. (The exhaust line of the cooling thing for the condenser, I poked out through a gap in the 200-year-old siding, and it dripped back into the stream, which was kind of entertaining.)
I set up the still while i painted signs for a total of about 8 hours over two days. The first session, I ran a 16-gallon batch of mead, mostly made from honey from the hives on the farm, and it yielded a fiery but distinctly honey-flavored high-proof vodka. I cut off the tailings too late, though, and wound up with some gross stuff in the second collection jar. So the second day, I set up my signpainting workshop and threw the tailings from the previous night in with the stuff that came out of the crazy turbo yeast batch from like, forever ago, which I’d treated with citric acid in the meantime. And I redistilled it.
And it cut the volume down by about half, and came out like 190 proof, this shit is unreal, and harsh as fuck, but it’s definitely ethanol and doesn’t have gross ammonia shit in it. So, there’s that.
Anyway. Distillin’.
While I was running the still people kept pulling into the driveway and having conversations with me and I was like, don’t look at my whiskey still, don’t look at my whiskey still, pay no attention to the thing on fire with a giant shiny copper thing sitting on it in the back of this building while I talk to you, because it’s easy as hell to get a distilling license in NY State now but I don’t have one yet so don’t look at my whiskey still.
