I’ve decided I won’t get married unless it’ll ensure an alliance with France.

I shocked the shit out of some conservative friends by very sincerely saying that marriage is absolutely sacred to me: it is for the assurance of succession to offspring, and so as I am not planning to reproduce I have no place entering into a marriage.

Hey, that's one approach to it! I'm somewhat similar, really; I do accept reasons for marriage that don't include reproducing, but I have a great respect for marriage as a permanent and lifelong commitment, and am very aware that I am not that committed and never will be. I'm more the "you have failed to wash the dishes for the third time this week, if I wanted to look at dirty dishes I could live alone and only have to look at half as many, goodbye forever!" type.

Honestly, I've spent 90% of my life cohabiting with other people; NOT cohabiting is the thing I am dedicated and committed to at this point.
